As Massachusetts continues to see a rise in severe pregnancy complications, the funding will allow Melanin Mass Moms to cover the cost of doulas, professionals trained to offer support and guidance during pregnancy; create an emergency fund to help those experiencing crises like homelessness and food insecurity; and host mental health workshops, according to Lotin and Tiffany Lozanne, president of the board— Zeina Mohammed, Boston Globe

Black Maternal Health Week! Sharing Black Birth Stories.

For Black Maternal Health week we’ll be sharing some amazing birth stories. Our stories deserve to be heard and shared. Not only those of trauma and difficulty but stories of joy and celebration. See more of Stephanie’s story below:

When I found out I was pregnant I was so ecstatic and could not wait to experience all the physical changes over the next 9 months. I could not believe I was growing my own little human. As a public health professional I was very much aware of the birth outcomes of Black women and babies so I created a plan to support and allow me, my partner and our baby to thrive despite the chaos of the world. My plan included my partner, our village, a Black OB/GYN and my doula. Reflecting back on my birth journey the Black OB/GYN and my doula were critical. I needed to know that my OB/GYN understands the complexity and nuisances of Black motherhood. Dr. Reed was amazing! During my appointments I felt like I was chatting with one of my peeps. She allowed space for my list of questions, concerns and fears. This allowed me to create a strong rapport with me and feel safe with who would deliver my child and ensure my well-being. The second ingredient was my doula, Dashanna, was also incredible! She was a wealth of information for myself and my partner. Most importantly, she helped us think about how we welcomed our baby into the world. We created a baby list and I packed all sorts of comfort items for my hospital stay. Dashanna helped support myself and my partner during the birth of our baby. My hope is that all Black women have access to the committed Black women I encountered to center joy and love in my birth journey. Lastly our village! The phone calls, texts, visits, prepared plans and memes were all incredible in sustaining me postpartum.

Celebrating Black Children’s Book Week!

Melanin Mass Moms Celebrates Black Children Book Week! Representation in Literature is so important for our black children. We were able to giveaway 24 black children books to our members throughout Massachusetts.

Tufts Health Plan Sponsorship

Tufts Health Plan provided us with a grant that allowed us to provide 18 moms with a postpartum care bag! Each bag had some essential items for moms during those first few weeks after labor and delivery.

Celebrate Melanin Motherhood!

This year for Black History Month we are shining light on our collective Melanin Motherhood journeys. Historically, we all know too well how much black and brown moms are undervalued. Help us celebrate and honor the women who get it all done, who are selfless, and who love unconditionally.
